BOUNDARY WATERS

After Congress overturned a 20-year shield against mining in the wilderness—a threat to the region’s ecosystem and outdoor-recreation economy—Minnesotans began to organize.

Today, Governor Tim Walz issued an executive order to protect them. He stated, “The Boundary Waters is a national treasure and home to some of Minnesota’s most pristine waters and wilderness. This place is deeply personal to me, to Minnesotans, and to people across the country.”

TAKE ACTION
The fight isn’t over. Minnesota lawmakers must enact laws to protect the region. Save the Boundary Waters has a website with action steps and resources. Join their mailing list for more information.

TEXAS & THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

Texas Senate Bill 10 requires the state’s public schools to display the Ten Commandments. In addition, the state-developed elementary curriculum, Bluebonnet Learning, contains Bible stories. Both of these violate our freedom of religion.

TAKE ACTION
Families and teachers in Texas can stand for religious freedom by sending a formal legal notice to their school district. Micro Activism has simplified the process. All it takes is a few minutes, a printer, and a trip to the post office.

OMAHA SCHOOLS SHOCK GLOVES UPDATE

Last week, it was revealed that Omaha police were set to roll out 40 pairs of shock gloves in area public schools. The gloves deliver a potent shock when deployed by law enforcement. Further reporting uncovered that the gloves had already been in schools. Last year, they were used twice on students.

After a heated board of education meeting last night, where parents and teachers voiced their concern, Superintendent Matthew Ray wrote a letter to the city requesting the gloves not be used on campus. Omaha Mayor John Ewing announced just hours ago that the city will honor the request.

TAKE ACTION
Three additional school districts in the Omaha-area have yet to ban the gloves. If you are in the Omaha area, flood your school district phone lines and inboxes. Ask you prinicpals whether the gloves will be permitted on their campus.

DELETE DOOR DASH

DoorDash is supporting H.R. 9720, a bill that would revoke DC’s ability to regulate local fees. If this bill passes, it would save the company a 20-cent delivery fee. In addition, the company has been silent on the arrests of their employees by ICE—including Joan Sebastian Guerroro.

TAKE ACTION
Delete DoorDash is calling on the company to withdraw their support of HB 9720 and issue a statement condemning the arrests of delivery drivers.

1,000 Mile March & How You Can Protect The Vote

Since the dawn of the second Trump administration, our rights have been under attack. Laws have been passed to restrict protests, bodily autonomy, educational content, and more. Then in April, after the gavel fell on the Louisiana v. Callais decision, states like Louisiana and Tennessee sought to silence Black voices. Another day, another blow to democracy.

It’s easy to lose hope, to feel unsure how to fight. However, in the wake of these defeats, hundreds of groups are rising. They are hosting voter drives, canvassing campaigns, and rallies. They are putting conviction into action.

Among them is 1,000 Miles to Memphis—a march of activists, business owners, and public figures. Their goal is to register 100,000 voters.

Recently, I spoke with , the author of Beauty of Belonging and an organizer of the march. She explained that the multiracial coalition was created to push back against the attack on voting rights and the proliferation of gerrymandering.

The website spoke to how the organizers selected their route: “The truth is that we could have chosen almost any path through the South and we would have been walking in the footsteps of racism, discrimination, and federally-mandated Native American genocide.

“Such is the nature of the American South.

“But we are equally walking in the shadows of giants of the Civil Rights movement, Labor Rights organizers, and Suffragettes.”

One mission of the march is to support the work of grassroots organizations. “Every day that we’re there, we’re talking to organizations, we’re featuring them on our channels, and we’re also raising money for this project.” Apart from covering expenses for the march, 1,000 Miles to Memphis is making donations to local organizations: Equity Alliance, NAACP, Stand Up Nashville, etc.

The march kicked off in Nashville. “We had people from the indigenous community do a land acknowledgement. And then we had the Tennessee organizations come out and speak,” shared Gwen. It was an evening of community—food, music, and camaraderie.

At 5:00 AM the next day, they began to march. They walked—through the pouring rain, along highways and under canopies of trees. After 10 miles, though their feet and clothing was soaked, they rested, only to rise with the dawn the next day. And so they have continued for weeks.

To Gwen, the march is more than about registering voters. “It’s also building relationships and bridges and connectivity and community.”

SAVE BIG BEND

Over the past week, community members have gathered across Texas to protect Big Bend National Park.

On Sunday, Austin residents protested at an I-35 overpass bridge. According to social media posts, over 40 Texans gathered to call for Governor Abbott and the state legislature to stop the construction in Big Bend.

The group will continue to protest every Sunday at 10:00 AM. View the video and connect with the organizers HERE.

It was one of several protests taking place across the state. Yesterday, a smattering of about 150 outdoor enthusiasts, environmentalists, and concerned community members gathered under the sheer walls of Santa Elena Canyon. Despite the temperatures, they stood on the shores of the Rio Grande to oppose the construction slicing through the park’s pristine landscape. They held banners, chanted, and called on Texans to flood Governor Abbott’s phones. (Watch a video of the protest.)

No Big Bend Wall—one of the organizers behind the protests—words to debunk the rhetoric around “smart walls.”

“While the idea may sound good on paper, in practice it’s been an absolute embarrassment— not to mention all of the harms and risks it brings throughout the borderlands.

“For example, during recent floods, the waterborne barrier systems in a stretch of the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass broke off and slammed into 2 bridges, requiring them both to be shut down. Not only that, but the destruction and trash from the destroyed buoys is a huge problem for the community.”

SHORTS: NY Pushes Back Against ICE

After news broke that ICE would soon be armed with shock gloves, New York pushed back.

In a press conference, Governor Hochul stated, "On its face, it seems like a violation of civil rights to cause that kind of physical harm to an individual, regardless of what the offense may be.”

Attorney General Letitia James added, “"We're reviewing the RFP at this point in time, but it appears to be arbitrary and capricious at this point in time. It appears to be in violation of a number of laws, including our constitution.”

In addition, New York announced that it would allocate $7.25 million to provide legal services for unaccompanied minors. Earlier this month, the grants allocated to provide legal counsel to migrant children expired. The Trump administration tapped Burke Law Group, a Houston-based firm with ties to the President, to recieve $150 million to provide council. After public outcry, the firm declined the contract.

We can pressure other states to follow New York’s lead. Call your state’s attorney general and governor to insist they allocate funds to provide legal counsel for unaccomanpied minors.

There are six ways you can join this fight:

Flood Governor Abbott’s phone lines. Call at 512-463-2000. Tell him to stop the construction in Big Bend.
Use 5Calls to call your representatives. They have a script.
Congress is on recess until August 31. Visit their regional offices and make your voice heard.
Protest! You can protest at NP field offices, BLM offices, and other national park entrances. If you are in Texas… Protest on Sunday in Austin at 10 AM. Protest on Saturday at Study Butte at 8 AM.
Sign the petition. Their goal is 200,000 signatures. They are at 177,000.
Submit a public comment. !!DUE AUGUST 31!! Customs and Border Patrol is required to collect public comments. Let’s flood the system.

The Shock G.L.O.V.E: A Tool or a Weapon? The $20 Million Question

By March 2027, thousands of ICE agents may be armed with a new “tool.” According to a Homeland Security record, the department has allocated $10 to $20 million to purchase “conductive distraction and de-escalation” devices.

An invoice from 2025 revealed that Rockingham County, NC, paid $ 5,580 for four gloves. Training added another $1,390 to the tab. Until the final receipts are posted, we can only estimate the number of units. However, based on these figures, well over 10,000 shocker gloves may hit the streets in the coming months.

On the surface, the CTG-5 G.L.O.V.E—designed and sold by Compliant Technologies— is a “use-of-force tool.” Their own materials beg the populace to question that classification.

A promotional video posted to the company’s YouTube page touts it as a “safe” product. In their own words, it “puts out 80% less current than other typical tools” and it leaves “no burns, marks, or scars.” Minutes later, Jeff Niklaus, founder and CEO of Compliant Technologies, promises: “no current ever enters their body.” The glove is then deployed, causing a healthy adult to crumple to the floor, cursing.

In an article in The Daily Journal, Jenn Rolnick Borchetta of the American Civil Liberties Union voiced a concern many feel. “ICE spent the last year showing this country they are too quick to use force. Now they will be able to deploy electric shocks with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do.”

In the article, John Peters, president of the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, classifies the shock as a “distraction,” comparing it to a “bee sting.” However, in your experience, do distractions and bee stings typically cause healthy men to drop to their knees?

The public face of the company calls it a “tool.” Page four of the user guide, available on their website, calls it a “weapon.” Which is it?

A careful reading of the guide raises additional red flags. On page twelve, a red warning label reads, “No more than two (one pair or equivalent) of G.L.O.V.E. devices should be applied at one time to a single subject. No more than 15-second activation duration should be deployed for a Level 2 ROE event.”

The next page recommends that the glove not be used on higher-risk populations: the elderly, small children, pregnant women, and the severely handicapped. It also cautions, “Any use of force, including CD3 deployment, may cause or contribute to death or serious injury.” A section titled “Physiological Considerations” notes that the device may “increase the affects that can cause sudden death including physiological changes.”

Americans ought to be concerned. When a weapon capable of bringing an adult to their knees with the tap of a button is released, hard questions are necessary. When that same weapon is placed into the hands of an agency infamous for using excessive force against the very population the manual urges caution towards, concern is appropriate.

So what do we do?

ACTION STEPS

UNDERSTAND | Read and share the Gen 3 & Gen 4 Product User Guide. Pages 4, 12, 13, 14, and 18 note safety concerns. Familiarize yourself with it. Watch the demonstration video.
INFORM | Send this manual to your senators, representatives, state representatives, and local city council. Draw their attention to the pages that outline the risks. Add the video of the glove being demonstrated. Demand that they proactively address its likely misuse.
CALL OR VISIT your representatives. They are on recess until August 31.
Print the manual, highlight it, and deliver it to their office. Ask, “Should these weapons, which can be activated by accident, be on our streets? Should they be handed to a department that refuses to hold its agents accountable?”

GET LOUD | Protest. Share. Do not let this happen quietly.
PREPARE | These will likely roll into our streets. If you are an organizer or host ICE Watch trainings, add a section on these gloves. Be prepared to spot them. Update your safety and first aid procedures. Be proactive.

DEFEND BIG BEND

In the southwest, a battle is waging. It is being fought by conservationists and local businesses. They are the David to the federal government’s Goliath.

The battleground is the southern border, specifically, the stretch of canyons, rivers, and plains that stretch through Big Bend National Park. Instead of untouched vistas, access roads will soon mark the landscape. Along stretches snaking near the Rio Grande, a wall will skirt the mountains and shorelines.

In a social media post, Laiken Jordahl, an advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity, wrote, “We hear they will soon be building a man camp to house construction workers in the national park. They will be pumping massive amounts of groundwater for construction. They will be dynamiting Mariscal Mountain and other sheer canyon walls to build senseless roads through the wilderness. They will be putting up steel vehicle barriers in locations vehicles have never and could never cross the border.

“We're witnessing the beginning of the biggest attack on an American national park in generations.”

In an open letter to Texas senators and Governor Abbott, over 140 businesses called for the state to stand against the project. According to the letter, though Big Bend occupies a 517-mile stretch of the border, it saw just 1.3% of all southwest border apprehensions.

“On March 9, 2026, all five border sheriffs in the Big Bend region issued a bipartisan joint statement opposing barrier construction, stating that steep mountain ranges, deep canyons, expansive desert landscapes, and the Rio Grande itself already create formidable natural barriers, and that border security is not a one- size-fits-all proposition.”

On the U.S. Customs and Border Protection page, Smart Wall Map, you can view the details of the project. Contracts can be viewed on the USAspending.gov website. According to this site, three companies have been contracted to build a combination of walls and roads in and near Big Bend National Park: Barnard Construction, Southwest Valley Contractors, and Fisher Sand & Gravel.

Resistance history has taught us that one of the most effective forms of protest is targeted boycotts and protests. In addition, local businesses can hold incredible sway when they work together. Here are a few ways to help.

The Everyday: Day 1—Testing. Testing.

Over the summer, I asked one question: What is the future of We (the People) Dissent? How can I continue to record the stories of resistance and move people to action?

Then it occurred to me: People need hope AND practical action steps.

The headlines are devastating. Rights are under assault. Community members are languishing in detention centers. Well-paying jobs are scarce. Public lands are being stripped. Every day, we close our browsers and shove aside the rising tide of hopelessness.

It’s not that we don’t want to act: It’s that we don’t know how.

Starting today, We (the People) Dissent will share one story of hope, as well as one strategy to push back against a recent assault on our freedom. The calls to action will be timely and take a page from resistance history.

It will be published daily (well, nearly), and the experiment will last two weeks. At which point, I’ll ask for your input.

So, what role can you play? You can submit stories of hope. People need to hear all the good that is happening. Whether it’s a protest of one or a walk-out of hundreds, it matters. Links to local newspapers are welcome, as are original stories not covered elsewhere.

RISING WITH THE SUN TO STAND IN SOLIDARITY

BLUE ASH, OH

Hundreds of people lined Kenwood and Malsbury roads in Blue Ash, Ohio, early Sunday morning outside a federal immigration office. They gathered to stand with their Haitian neighbors.

Ignite Peace partnered with Miami Valley Immigration Coalition to organize the demonstration that drew over 500 community members. They flew Haitian flags. They chanted, “Immigrants are welcome here!” Their signs read “Love over hate” and “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.”

Blue Ash, OH, is one location where local Haitian immigrants have been ordered to appear after the Supreme Court upheld the President’s decision to end their protected status. Since the ruling, community members have begun to receive letters mandating check-ins. At these check-ins, several have been outfitted with ankle monitors, causing several activists to draw a parallel to the yellow stars worn during the Third Reich

“A lot of Cincinnatians don’t know that there’s an ICE field office in Blue Ash in the first place,” Kelly Sheehy, with Ignite Peace, told the Springfield News-Sun. “Let alone that people are being asked to drive over 70 miles from their homes for these check-ins when they’ve already been stripped of their driver’s license. They’ve already been stripped of their work permits.”

ACTION

If you live in Ohio and would like to be involved, connect with Ignite Peace or Miami Valley Immigration Coalition. In regions with Haitian and Syrian refugee populations, form mutual aid networks. Along with the loss of their status, many have lost their work permits as well.

People are pushing back against the border wall in Big Bend. Local organizers are protesting. No Big Bend Wall has created a petition and action steps.

The week of August 16-22, over 300 cities will be demanding an end to the use of all automated license plate readers (ALPR) for policing purposes. Join one.

On August 28, the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington, Rev. Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, and the Drum Major Institute will be hosting a march to defend voting rights. If you can, attend. It will be a historic day.

A Quiet Harm: The Toll of a Manufactured Crisis Turned Siege

When a woman in a coral hijab is buzzed through the glass door, Shirley grabs the handle. A second woman blocks the doorway. She holds the crash bar with one hand, shielding her face from view with the hem of her hijab.

A minute later, after Shirley tosses out several questions, the woman pulls the door shut. He grabs the handle. She has to yank it closed.

Weeks earlier, during a Cabinet meeting, the President said, “I don’t want them (Somali immigrants) in our country, I’ll be honest with you… their country is no good for a reason.” He claimed they contributed “nothing.” Word leaked to the media that immigration enforcement would set its sights on the Twin Cities, home to about 84,000 Somalis. They would be the target—or so the press releases promised.

We can remember all that followed: the surge, the whistles, the clouds of milky tear gas, the neighbors in hiding, the marches, the arrests, and, of course, the deaths. Thousands suffered. Hundreds of thousands were impacted. Millions went to bed wondering, “Would their city be next?”

“This is a very human story, and it’s not based in Somali fraud.” This is Christy Branham, one of the Politic Chicks, a podcast, Substack, and activism hub created by two Minnesotans. A few weeks ago, they published a deep dive into the “scandal” in their piece, “A Manufactured Crisis: Minnesota Medicaid Fraud, an Unprecedented ICE Crackdown, and a National Medicaid Rollback.”

“In December, when we were seeing Nick Shirley show up to these daycares and the narrative being pushed out about the Somali community, that’s just not the truth,” said Monica. “The vast majority of them are American citizens, and even those that are not have documentation.”

As a retired schoolteacher, Monica regularly taught Somali children. Her tone when describing her pupils is warm. She describes the community as “wonderful” and “caring.” When you listen to Minnesotans, it’s evident that the President’s caricature does not reflect their experience.

So, how did Shirley end up outside those preschools on a winter day? Was there fraud in Minnesota?

Yes, there was. However, it was not Nick Shirley or the Department of Justice that uncovered it.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND BITES

Investigations spanning years had uncovered nonprofits and healthcare providers defrauding the government of tens of millions of dollars through programs like Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI), Housing Stabilization, and Feeding Our Future. The cases had been investigated and adjudicated. The ringleaders had been prosecuted. Safeguards had been implemented. Policies had been revised. Fraud had happened, and a system to prevent it had been put in place as well—all by the state of Minnesota.

The record, though, did not fit their narrative. Instead, as Monica shared, “They collapsed these three different programs together.” Three separate programs, with three separate sets of culpable parties, were reduced to a single catchphrase. “The phrase ‘Somali fraud’ is what they applied to this as a justification for Operation Metro Surge because they knew it would play well to their republican base.”

In other words: “They were not looking for fraud… they were looking for headlines.”

The surge was a cover, and under its guise, the Twin Cities were occupied. Businesses shuttered. Families hid in their homes. Children were afraid to attend school. Two community members lost their lives. The City of Minneapolis has estimated $700 million in lost economic activity. Though we can count arrests, deportations, and lost wages, no calculator can tabulate the true toll.

“We would be remiss if we did not impact on children,” shared Christy. During the surge, school districts gave families a choice: send their children to school in person or attend classes online. Students missed invaluable instruction. They missed lunches, class parties, and recess. And when they returned in the late spring, some seats were left empty.

Monica shared one story that sums up the human toll of the surge. It came from a teacher. “Outside of her classroom was a bench… That was sort of a place for students to sit and take a breather. She got to where she knew who was sitting out there by the sound of their cries.”

This administration wants the story to begin in 2025. That fits their narrative. But it really began in 2017.

“These programs were authored and passed by a Republican majority in the House and Senate in Minnesota… They didn’t add the safeguards,” said Renee Herskovitz, the latest addition to the Politic Chicks.

Monica put it this way: “They built a room without a smoke detector and are now complaining about it.”

The Republican authors of the bill fought for minimal oversight. There was no need to place an undue burden on service providers, or so they argued. This is an assertion made time and again by Republican legislators: small government, less red tape. Then, when the inevitable fraud takes place, they deflect. In this case, it was Minnesota that paid the price.

“Yes, Minnesota, but you also need to look at the fact that the federal government has also come down on New York and California. The one common denominator is who the governor is, whether they are a Democrat or a Republican. The states that had Democratic governors were getting guff, and crackdowns, and clawbacks, and withholding from the federal government. Where states with Republican governors were getting a pass.”

This statement is not merely anecdotal. It is backed by numbers. Take Centene Corporation. In January 2017, under a Republican-majority House and Senate, a bill was passed permitting for-profit health insurance providers to contract with Medicaid’s managed-care programs. Enter Centene, the largest for-profit healthcare company in the nation.

Since that time, rampant overbilling by the health insurer has been uncovered. Christy broke down the numbers: “In four different states, Centene has had to pay billions of dollars in settlement money for overbilling. In Ohio, they paid $88.3 million… In Texas, they paid $165.6 million.” The list goes on.

And in Minnesota, $46 million. Christy continued, “Minnesota’s fraud rate is 2.1%. The national average is 6.1%.”

Centene Corporation gets a slap on the wrist. Texas and Ohio were defrauded of tens of millions of dollars more than Minnesota, yet they kept their funding. Though Louisiana, with a population of just 4.4 million, ranks fourth in the nation for Medicaid fraud, there has been no surge and no public smear campaign.

During our conversation, I was struck by the power of a narrative. This was a white-collar crime committed not by Somali preschool teachers, but by healthcare providers and networks of professionals. The founder and executive director of Feeding Our Future is Aimee Bock, a white woman. She was convicted and sentenced to decades in prison for stealing $250 million. The theft happened in boardrooms and office buildings, not in the neighborhoods of Minneapolis.

Yet, with the right messaging and slick sound bites, white-collar crime became immigrant crime. That became enough smoke to justify a siege.

The effects of that siege persist. Christy outlined the cost. “The government has withheld funding from the Medicaid program. There are people today who cannot go to the hospital. Children are not getting in-home services.” Families cannot afford rent because of program cuts. Hospitals are shuttering.

“I think a lot of people don’t even realize that their coverage is through that type of funding,” commented Renee. At least they didn’t until their coverage was cut or their benefits were reduced.

The fraud, the siege, and the cuts have left a lingering wound—a quiet harm felt in living rooms. Parents are absorbing the burden by driving farther for services. Adult children are shouldering additional responsibility by caring for their parents. Children are returning to empty homes after school while their mothers pick up extra shifts to make up for the income lost when their fathers were deported. Hundreds of thousands have felt the echoes of that video filmed on that wintry day.

Operation Metro Surge will be recorded in the history books. But will the manufactured crisis weaponized to justify it be remembered?

Only if we understand it and share it. Only if we, the people, chose not to forget.

JUSTICE FOR ALL VIGILS

On July 25, across hundreds of cities, people gathered to honor the lives of those lost to ICE violence. From small towns to major metropolises, communities came together to mourn, to honor, and to remember.

The day before the vigils, his sons spoke in Houston. His younger son, named after his father, asked us to picture our loved ones and to say their names aloud. Then, he asked us to picture them pinned to the ground, crying out in anguish. Picture what it would be like to watch them bleed out on a screen. He then asked us what we would do next.

“You wouldn’t cower and let bygones be bygones. You would surely move mountains, go hungry without sleep, marching incessantly to the slow beating drum of justice.”

They made a promise to their grandmother at their father’s wake—a promise to get justice for their father.

On Saturday, we joined them in that fight. However, Saturday was not enough. We must continue to fight alongside them and the 73 other families who have lost loved ones. Saturday must spill into Monday and Tuesday, into next week and next month. Together, we cannot cease marching toward justice.

LOS ANGELES

In Los Angeles, hundreds gathered to honor the 74 people who have died in ICE custody or during ICE operations. Organizations, faith leaders, activists, and community members carried black cardboard coffins through the streets, with white roses balanced on their lids.

“It is important for all of us, as citizens, to stand and speak, and not allow that to be normalized,” shared one of the organizers, Michelle Arkin, with ABC7.

SAN FRANCISCO

Hundreds gathered at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to bring visibility to the plight of the tens of thousands of community members being held in ICE detention, as well as the dozens who have died since the start of the second Trump presidency.

The human banner was organized by Indivisible SF. It read, “Don’t look away. ICE is evil,” alongside an upside-down American flag, with hundreds of residents of the Golden City forming the display.

CONCORD, CA

The Indivisible Resisters in Contra Costa County gathered to call on lawmakers to abolish ICE. About 250 people lined the street in front of the Federal Immigration Courthouse in Concord, CA.

SALEM SAYS “NO!” TO SURVEILLANCE

Communities are pushing back against invasive surveillance by protesting Flock Safety.

This week, the town of Salem announced that it will not renew its contract and will remove its Flock Automatic License Plate Readers. According to the town’s statement, “The City has determined that there are insufficient protections for the ALPR data generated by Flock’s systems. Such data should be owned and used only in furtherance of Salem’s public safety priorities.”

The statement does not mention that it was residents who first brought concerns about Flock Safety to light. North Shore Progressives released a statement:

“Local activists congratulate the City of Salem on its decision to terminate its contract with Flock Safety. This decision is the result of an eight-month organizing effort by a coalition of local grassroots organizations and concerned Salem residents in partnership with the ACLU of Massachusetts.”

The people have the power to end injustice and abuse. This week, the people of Salem demonstrated exactly that.

ICE Surges—The People Rise to Push Back

Despite the recent deaths of Lorenzo, Joan, and Juan at the hands of ICE, the agency continues to indiscriminately arrest hundreds, if not thousands, of people a day. As detention center proposals are rejected in cities, the administration is eyeing detaining immigrants in Guantanamo Bay. This is a page straight out of the Third Reich’s handbook.

We must resist. This week, you can begin to push back in two ways. One, join or hold a vigil on July 25. There are over 220 locations. If you cannot find your city on the list, hold one with friends.

Second, Indivisible is launching Immigrant Justice Summer. It is a set of trainings to help prepare your city BEFORE an ICE surge hits.

When Will it be Enough: The Time for Millions in the Streets is Here

“Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow… But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds of thousands will join with you, never comes.”

This is an excerpt from the book They Thought They Were Free by Milton Mayer. In a chapter titled “But Then It Was Too Late,” Mayer recounts the story of a philologist living in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich.

In the chapter, he describes the quiet rise of the Nazi regime. Bit by bit, day by day, the Third Reich desensitized the people. After all, it didn’t begin with the camps. It never does.

“Suddenly it all comes down, all at once. You see what you are, what you have done, or, more accurately, what you haven’t done (for that was all that was required of most of us: that we do nothing). You remember those early morning meetings of your department when, if one had stood, others would have stood, perhaps, but no one stood. A small matter, a matter of hiring this man or that, and you hired this one rather than that. You remember everything now, and your heart breaks. Too late. You are compromised beyond repair.”

Every day, it grows a little worse. Every day, we wonder, when will it be enough? If history has taught us anything, it is that it will never be enough. People will shut their ears. People will close their eyes. There will never be a moment when the country, as a whole, shakes free from its slumber and rises.

“Each step was so small, so inconsequential, so well explained… one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing. One day it is over his head.”

For years, we have edged closer to being in over our heads. Over the past few months, the march has become a sprint.

Weeks ago, two people were confronted by the Department of Homeland Security. They were not accused of violence or making threats. They were tracked and confronted by agents for dissent—for posting words of disapproval. Coupled with the charges brought against the Minnesota 15 and the weighty sentences handed to the Prairieland 8, the walls protecting free speech shudder under the onslaught of this administration’s attacks.

This was not the first assault. For the past year, the White House's official website has hosted a McCarthy-era-style list of media offenders. Its landing page reads, “Misleading. Biased. Exposed,” and highlights an offender of the week. A website that schoolchildren once visited to learn about the history of the People’s House has become a platform for propaganda.

Then, there’s the rhetoric—the coordinated campaign to divide and disparage. First, lefties were radical scum. Then, they called us violent. Today, we are communists, deformed by hate. See the progression? Radical became violent became deformed. Once, we were people. Today, we are monsters.

In contrast, this administration elevates the right. On January 6, they were patriots. Then, they were true Americans. Recently, Miller called the right superior. "Superior" and “master race”—two sides of the same coin.

It’s tempting to wait for a moment, a statement so hateful it finally opens the nation’s eyes, or an accusation so heinous that it causes even the faithful to withdraw their support. Or perhaps, an organization will launch a national strike or a sweeping boycott. History has taught us that our waiting may be our demise. That’s the thing about lines in the sand: they are easy to erase.

Instead, we must seize the millions of trifling moments before they slip through our fingers. We must not wait for a moment. We must build a movement. Not one that relies on mass rallies, but one that seeps into the mundane, that disrupts the ordinary.

When I read the words recorded in They Thought They Were Free, I am unable to hush the fear that creeps into my sleep. These words could be mine. They could have been written in 2026. And that terrifies me. But then I remember all we have done and all we have the potential to do.

Within about a week, my list of protests will have grown to 50,000 in 2026. In 2025, the total number of protests tallied ranged from 55,000 to 60,000. Each protest represents a collection of people who have the potential to shake the foundations of power. Consider that. There are thousands of trained, committed groups of earnest people ready to stand. Movements begin in living rooms and public squares. In thousands of cities, the seeds of change are waiting.

To reclaim our democracy and build a better one, we must add consistency and strategy. The millions from March 28 must push back today, and next week, and the week after that. Those masses, though, need a plan. In contemporary actions and the movements from decades past, we have templates. It’s time we draw inspiration, create a path, and call those waiting to join us.

By my estimation, there are at least twenty states or metropolitan areas primed to launch mass, coordinated movements. Beyond those, another three hundred-plus scattered cities and towns host weekly dissent. We have the tools. We have the workers. We have the templates. It’s time to build a better democracy, but this time for all of us.

THREE PROTESTS: ONE WEEKEND

It has become evident that behind the press conferences, speeches, and social media posts, there is a framework—a script. Whether it is the Vice President, the Press Secretary, or the Director of DHS, the talking points are the same: the left are violent communists intent on destroying all that America holds dear.

Over and over again, they repeat these claims: free speech is unpatriotic. Democrats are traitors. Protesters are violent.

One day ago, the White House’s website published a page titled, Trump Administration Unleashes Global Campaign to Crush Radical Left Terrorism. One section reads: “One of the hallmarks of left-wing violence and terrorism is its completely pre-textual and disingenuous appeal to civil liberties in an effort to shield its own violence…”

Don’t brush past those words. The White House—the People’s House—describes an appeal to decency, equality, and freedom as a shield for violence.

Yesterday, Stephen Miller delivered a speech that could rival the rhetoric of Joseph Goebbels. At the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, he described protesters as deformed, craven monsters intent on harming families. In the next breath, he praised the political right as superior. Adjectives such as these have historically been used to dehumanize opponents and justify persecution, imprisonment, and, in some cases, mass atrocities.

We, the people, are the power that can stop this. It is within our hands. However, it requires all of us—millions of us—taking to the streets and dissenting every week.

This weekend, there are nearly 1,000 protests, vigils, teach-ins, and marches across the U.S. They are a part of three campaigns: Good Trouble Lives On, De-ICE Citizens Bank, and Stop ICE!

If there isn’t one near you, start one. Every protest began with one person. Be that one person.

A Predictable Death—And Our Response

“Whenever you put guns in the hands of men not bridled by morality and emboldened by impunity, death is as certain as the sunrise.”

I wrote these words on the day of Renee Good’s murder. They are no less true today.

In seven days, two men have lost their lives—Lorenzo in Houston and a 26-year-old man in Biddeford. And though the community member slain in Maine today is yet unnamed, he was beloved to one of us.

Today, a mother is weeping for her son,
a young person is grieving a friend,
and, likely, a child is mourning an uncle, brother, cousin, or even father.

Our nation has put guns into the hands of men not bridled by morality and emboldened by impunity. This young man will not be the last. That much is certain.

We (the people) are the power that can end this. Yes, by our vote, but also by taking to the streets. But what will it take?

It will take hundreds of daily protests and vigils outside of representative offices and on the steps of Capitol buildings. It will take boycotting every business connected to ICE and its terror. It will take hundreds of thousands of us trained to document ICE encounters, standing at the ready. It will take community. It will take you and I together, relentlessly, daily, marching towards justice.

Here is the good news: We have the structure, the training, and the people. All that is lacking is consistency.

If you remember one sentence from this article, remember this one: Now is the time to dissent relentlessly.

The Shot Unheard—ICE Claims Another Life

Yesterday, while many of us were still drinking our morning coffee or resting in our beds, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was drawing his final breath on the pavement of a Houston intersection.

If this is the first time you are hearing of his death, I am not surprised. As of yet, no footage has surfaced of the shooting itself. Even in its aftermath, we have little to go on, though a couple of videos exist.

One shows ICE officers bending over a prone man beside a white cargo van—Lorenzo’s van—with a black SUV angled to block its path. It is brief, only a few seconds long. Lorenzo lies on his side in a driveway. He cries out in anguish. The driver pulls away.

Today, his son, Ronaldo Salgado, spoke at a press conference. He remembered his father. Lorenzo was a quiet man, a man of routine. Every morning, he woke, ate a hearty breakfast, and drove to work. Every evening, he returned home, sat on his porch, and listened to music. He was the father of two college-educated sons, a grandfather, and a husband. For 35 years, he called this country home.

According to his son, he was in the process of obtaining a work permit. His son shared that he had crossed every T and dotted every I. Lorenzo was the picture of a hard worker, a kind man.

Yesterday, according to his family, his morning unfolded as usual. He rose at 5:00 a.m. He dressed, ate, and kissed his wife goodbye. Lorenzo then drove to pick up his workers. Around 6:45 a.m., with one employee left to collect, he was tailed by a black, unmarked SUV. What unfolded next is unclear, but within minutes, he would be lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

At the press conference, Rep. Al Green called on the city of Houston to take up the investigation. LULAC—the League of United Latin American Citizens—is joining him in that request. They called for transparency, the release of all footage, and an independent investigation. Together, they urged the community to come forward with eyewitness accounts and video footage.

Dissenters, I must confess, the silence surrounding his death is deafening. Within hours of Good and Pretti’s slayings, vigils were planned, memorials were constructed, and calls for justice rang from every corner. Yet, as I write this article, there is not a single protest or vigil posted on Mobilize, at least none that I can find.

While there may be no footage and while we may not have all the answers, we know this: a good man has died at the hands of ICE. Once again, they drove an unmarked vehicle. Once again, they claim self-defense. But was it?

If he had rammed a black vehicle, and if he had been shot while driving, why does video taken by WUSA9 show his van without broken lights or clear signs of an accident? Why are the windshield and hood intact? Where are the bullet holes?

We may not have all the answers, but we have enough questions to cry out for justice. We have sufficient reason to doubt the narrative. And we have heard enough to know that Lorenzo was a neighbor, a father, a friend—a part of what makes our country worth fighting for.

The Cost of Keeping an Oath

Major Jason Paul Watson swore an oath twenty years ago:

“I, Jason Paul Watson, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”

On July 1, he kept it.

His dress blues shone in stark contrast to the gleaming pillars and arches of the Capitol building. Activists and Rep. Al Green formed a half moon behind him, holding signs that read, “Congress, this is on you” and “Remove the regime.”

When the crowd of reporters, organizers, and protesters stilled, he spoke. He began poignantly. “In the grand scheme of things, I’m just a nobody. What matters far more than who I am is what I have to say, and the price I am willing to pay to say it.”

And a price he will pay. To protest in uniform is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. To protest on the steps of the Capitol—while calling for the impeachment of a would-be king—is a risk that will come at the price of his career and freedom. If the sentences of the Prairieland 8 and the indictments of the Minneapolis 15 are any indicator, the gavel will fall on Maj. Watson. He will be made an example of, which, ironically, is the point.

The reason he stood that day was not to rebel, but to compel. In every movement, there must be a first. In this moment, Maj. Watson is leading the way, or so he hopes.

Between the lines of his speech, you can read his love for his country, its people, and those beyond our borders. He remembered the fallen on our soil—Good and Pretti. He recalled the lives lost abroad—the deaths in Venezuela and Iran, and the 500,000 who died after USAID was shuttered. He honored those who have died in combat. He condemned the vilification of the men tortured in CECOT. He remembered.

After he spoke, he climbed the steps of the Capitol. In his hand, he held a sign. Its white letters spelled out the refrain he repeated throughout his speech: “Impeach. Convict. Remove.” Supporters cheered. They shouted, “Thank you!”

Within minutes, he was approached by Capitol Police. He did not resist. They cuffed him and led him away.

Days earlier, Maj. Watson filmed an interview with Lights On with Jessica Denson. During their conversation, he addressed the oath he took twenty years prior. It is that oath—not a political ideology or party—that motivated him to take a stand.

During the interview, he added this, “The moment he does something that is brazenly unconstitutional, I would argue that he is no longer somebody that you owe your allegiance to. That is the whole point of the oath—that we don’t swear an oath to a president.”

The oath our military takes is to the Constitution, not a person. It’s to an idea put to pen and paper—the idea that all of us are created equal and entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And when that idea is attacked, by enemies foreign or domestic, whether they sit in a fighter jet or the Oval Office, then it must be defended. He swore to that, as has every member of our military.

On July 1, Maj. Watson kept that oath. He stood.. And I hope he will not stand alone.

Though the Washington, D.C., police have elected not to press charges, he has been confined by the Air Force to his base and is under a gag order. He will likely face a court-martial for violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

A New Direction for We (the People) Dissent

Hello Dissenters,

First, we are not going anywhere. However, that doesn’t mean you should scroll away either. I need your input and support.

Since beginning in February 2026, millions have connected to protests, stories of resistance, and opportunities for civic engagement. On top of all of this, we maintain one of the most comprehensive databases of protests in the U.S.

Recently, though, I have noticed a shift in traffic. It has caused me to wonder what We (the People) Dissent needs to become. Over the next two weeks, I will be seeking the answer to this question.

Today, I am turning to you with two asks:

ONE, please, give me feedback. What kinds of stories keep you engaged? What sort of content do you love? Should I expand into daily content? Should I write more “Dear Future Historian” articles? What if I created audio stories? Video? Lives? Below is a survey, but feel free to comment as well.

TWO, I believe this is important work—telling the stories of resistance and recording this moment for future generations. And I believe you agree.
